Our Story

In 1996, while I was a graduate student at the U of S, my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. To help deal with my loss, I established an adult figure skating club in her honour. My mother was a long-time contributor to figure skating in Saskatchewan. Anne Collingridge established several clubs throughout the province, including Naicam and Quill Lake, as well as teaching and performing at many others throughout the province. My mother was an outstanding athlete, graceful performer, and generous volunteer.

In the spring of 2001, Skate Canada sanctioned our Club, making it only one of two Saskatoon clubs to hold this designation. Since that sanction, many skaters have competed and tested under our name.

The Club is the University's official figure skating club. We operate throughout the regular university season - from September through March, ending the year with our annual ice show.

Originally, the Club was open to skaters of all levels from 17 years of age and up. In 2007, we lowered the minimum age to 16. Although the Club is geared toward university students, everyone is welcome.

Skaters choose whether they want to skate for exercise, to maintain or improve skills, or to continue testing and competing. Registered coaches are available for those who want private lessons.

Below is our original logo.

On the regular figure skating ice, skaters practice skills (which replaced figures), dance, interpretive, and freeskate. The regular session runs at approximately lunchtime Monday through Friday.

For a few years, we enjoyed a fun one-hour synchronized skating session once weekly. That program has now ended.

For more than a decade, our skaters have mastered jumps, spins, skills and dances which had eluded them for years.

Many completed levels of skills, dance and freeskate - from bronze to gold. We now have skaters preparing for diamond tests.

Others successfully competed at provincial, national and international competitions.

Our skaters frequently garner volunteer awards, scholarships and bursaries though the Club.

Everyone enjoys the friendly, relaxed atmosphere which promotes camaraderie on-ice and off. Many students say they don't know how they would have survived their first year of university or graduate school without the support they received at our little Club.

We are proud of every one of our skaters and our hardworking volunteers. Watch for our upcoming notable achievements section.

Your skating days do not have to end with high school or with the arrival of a new birth decade. At 50+ I still love to skate and participate in our annual ice shows. Several years ago, a car accident left me unable to jump or spin, but I am slowly regaining those skills. Sharing the ice with this vibrant, intelligent group of young people not only helped me on the road to healing, it helps keep me young and vibrant too. Thanks to the support of fellow skaters and the encouragement of coach Joanna Bell, spring 2007 found me competing at the Adult National Championships - and bringing home medals, just as Joanna has done several times.

The U of S ACFSC is a non-profit club, which means we rely heavily upon volunteers and fund-raising efforts to stay operational and to keep fees low for our skaters. Our ice fees remain significantly lower than other clubs in the City. To help sustain adult figure skating in Saskatchewan, contact Shirley Collingridge at the address below. Large or small, your volunteer efforts, gifts of cash, and prizes for raffles and draws are all greatly appreciated.
